RM Auctions: Pick #3 for Daily Driver

Our final pick as the perfect Daily Driver from the choices given at the 2014 RM auction at Amelia Island was difficult, but the decision has been made, and it is (as if you haven’t already seen it’s photo, just indulge us and play along)…
Daily Driver:
Lot 151: 1971 Mercedes Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet
21 20
This remarkable, unrestored Anthracite Grey Metallic 280 SE 3.5 convertible has only 56,000 miles on it from new, and has been owned and maintained by famed Mercedes Benz proprietors throughout it’s entire pampered life. It ticks all of the right boxes for us, including such over used categories as “patina”, “survivor” and “original”, although rightfully so.
While it would be difficult to relegate this almost flawless specimen to daily driver use, just looking at it’s inviting spacious cabin and perfectly worn leather have us imagining open air cruising with it’s top down piled with a group of close (and respectful of other people’s property) friends.
We wouldn’t have the restraint to hold us back from using it as much as possible while maintaining it properly, of course, even though only 802 were imported during 1971, the only year that Mercedes brought the 3.5 drop top to United States. It would make the perfect stable mate to the Dino sports car for canyon carving and the ’66 Lola for track days and vintage racing.
Which would be your top 3 picks for sports car, track car and daily driver given that you only could have 3 cars for your garage and they all had to come from the 2014 RM Auction at Amelia Island? Have fun trying to choose, it’s more difficult than it sounds…
